What is a sealant?
A tooth sealant is a thin layer of liquid plastic that is brushed into the fissures and cracks of the teeth, especially the back teeth. After the sealant is applied a blue spectrum natural light is applied to cure the plastic.
Why get sealants?
Sealants are added to the teeth to guard teeth against tooth decay. The sealant material fills in the fissures and cracks in the tooth that is a resting place for bacteria and food particles. These fissures and cracks are difficult to brush fully and are vulnerable to tooth decay.
Who should get sealants?
While each patients situation is different, sealants are typically recommended for children once their permanent teeth have emerged.
